Accra, March 11, GNA – The Minority Caucus in Parliament is demanding the Minister of Foreign Affairs to appear before Parliament, to clarify an alleged agreement between Ghana and the USA to purportedly cede Ghanaian territory for military operations against ISIS, a terrorist group, in northern Nigeria.
This follows comments allegedly made by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa at Chartan House in London recently, during a panel discussion.
Addressing a press conference at Parliament House on Wednesday, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, Ranking Member on Foreign Affairs Committee and NPP Member of Parliament for Damongo, said the Minority was deeply concerned about the implications of such an agreement.
The Minority argued that the alleged disclosure by the Foreign Minister has exposed Ghanaian nationals to potential terrorist attacks.
The Minority stressed that any arrangement involving the use of Ghanaian territory for foreign military operations required parliamentary approval under the Constitution of the Republic.
The Minority indicated that the previous NPP administration, during its eight years in office, did not enter into any agreement with USA to use Ghanaian soil as “bases” to attack another West African nation, and thus demanded the legal framework for such an agreement last December.
The group also asked the government to provide assurances to Ghanaians measures being undertaken to safeguarding their security and safety following this disclosure by the Foreign Minister.
