Accra, March 3, GNA – The Kingdom of Belgium has reiterated its clear and consistent support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as the most serious and credible basis for a lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the Sahara issue.
The position was reaffirmed on Monday by Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade, Mr. Maxime Prévot, after talks in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita.
Mr. Prévot said Belgium’s stance aligned with the position expressed in the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on 23 October 2025, noting that it recognised the existential importance of the Sahara question for Morocco and situates the region firmly within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.
The Belgian Foreign Minister further indicated that Brussels intended to translate this position into action at both diplomatic and economic levels, adding that Belgium’s approach remained firmly anchored in international law.
As part of this commitment, he confirmed that Belgium’s Ambassador in Rabat would soon be invited to visit the Sahara region to help prepare and support a number of economic initiatives.
These include visits by Belgian companies and the organisation of trade fairs in cooperation with regional investment agencies.
Belgium also reiterated that its Consulate General in Rabat is responsible for consular matters across the entirety of the Kingdom of Morocco, without regional distinction, including services for Belgian citizens residing in or travelling through the Sahara.
Mr. Prévot’s visit reflects the positive momentum in relations between Morocco and Belgium, marked by regular political dialogue and a shared determination to deepen a strategic partnership based on mutual respect and converging views on issues of common interest.
