Sege, March 08, GNA — The Ada West District Education Directorate has begun the construction of a teachers’ accommodation project at Tehey to address the high attrition rate of teachers in underserved communities.
Dr Stephen Arthur, the District Director of Education, said the project would provide decent accommodation for teachers posted to the community and improve teaching and learning outcomes.
Dr Arthur disclosed this in a welcome address during the district’s 69th Independence Day celebration parade held at the Sege Cluster of Schools Park under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”
He said the project had reached the foundation stage and commended the Ada West District Assembly to support the initiative through the provision of District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP) machines to excavate sand for the construction works.
He also expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people of Tehey for donating land and providing communal labour to support the project.
According to him, the district had adopted an innovative approach to generate additional funds for the project through an institutional farming initiative.
He explained that peppers and tomatoes would be cultivated on about 14 acres of land to generate revenue to support the completion of the accommodation facility.
Dr Arthur noted that the initiative had received technical support from the District Directorate of Agriculture, which had also supplied 50 bags of NPK fertiliser for the project.
He said the initiative demonstrated that local innovation and collective responsibility could complement government efforts in addressing infrastructure challenges in the education sector.
Dr Arthur emphasised that providing decent accommodation for teachers in remote communities would improve morale, increase instructional hours and ultimately enhance learning outcomes for pupils in the district.
