Assin Nyankumasi (C/R), Feb 28, GNA – All is set for the Rev Kojo Odame to be appointed as the ‘ambassador of grass-roots sports in basic schools’ by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Prof Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, National Coordinator for Schools and Grass-roots Sports, announced this during the launch of the KOMA Cup at Assin Manso in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
He said Rev Odame’s vision aligns with that of the Ministry and highlighted grass-roots sports development as a national policy worth pursuing.
Prof Sarpong stressed that despite the lack of tools and facilities, exceptional raw talent is evident at the basic level and must be deliberately nurtured.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Rev Odame welcomed the appointment as a step in the right direction, saying it would boost his morale to unearth more talents and promote sports across the country.
He emphasised that an abundance of untapped talent exists in rural areas that needs to be harnessed and pledged to restore the vibrancy of Ghanaian sports with a strong focus on grass-roots development and reviving interest in basic schools.
Rev Odame noted that the KOMA Cup competition is expected to serve as a catalyst for nurturing young talents in sports and integrating physical education more efficiently into Ghana’s education system to rebuild the country’s sporting future.
He appealed to footballers in the various communities to exhibit exceptional performance in the competition.
