Krachi East residents struggle with evening ‘dumsor’

Dambai (O/R), Feb. 16, GNA – Residents of the Krachi East Municipality are experiencing severe intermittent power outages, locally referred to as “dumsor,” occurring daily between 1900 hours and 2200 hours.

The persistent blackouts have disrupted evening activities, plunging homes into darkness and heat, and making it difficult for residents to relax or carry out household chores.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that the outages have become a daily challenge, with many residents struggling to cope.

Business owners, including Madam Belinda Yaa Tindo, say their operations are suffering as they are unable to keep products fresh due to lack of refrigeration.

“Most of our fruits need to be refrigerated, and the power outages have significantly affected our businesses here in Krachi East,” she said.

The GNA also noted that offices without standby generators are compelled to shut down during daytime outages, forcing workers outdoors to escape indoor heat.

Institutions with generators, on the other hand, are incurring increased operational costs, diverting funds from essential services.

The situation has triggered calls for urgent intervention to address the power challenges and provide relief to affected households and businesses.

The GNA’s observations highlight the need for a sustainable solution to the intermittent supply that continues to affect economic activities and public services.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed the outages in the Oti and Volta regions to upstream supply challenges rather than faults in its distribution network.

According to Madam Eunice Tweneboah-Koduah, Public Relations Officer of ECG, a stretched conductor line from Asikpe to Kadjebi was affecting the power distribution.

She said engineers were deployed to assess the problem and to undertake load redistribution.

“The engineers came last Thursday to the region for redistribution of load, and authorities are monitoring the situation to see if there will be an improvement,” she stated.

The ECG has assured the public that it was working to resolve the issue and restore stable power supply to the affected areas.
