Kadjebi (O/R), Feb. 27, GNA – Mr Gabriel Kudzawu, the Kadjebi Branch Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has disclosed that the Union, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, would soon embark on a joint operation to clamp down on lawlessness on the roads in the area.
He said the move formed part of efforts to promote road safety and reduce accidents within the Kadjebi enclave and its surrounding communities in the Oti Region.
Mr Kudzawu made this known at an Inter-Service and Sectoral Collaboration Meeting held at Kadjebi.
According to him, the increasing disregard for road traffic regulations by some drivers, including over-speeding, wrongful overtaking and failure to observe basic road signs, had resulted in avoidable accidents and the loss of precious lives.
He stressed that the Union would not sit unconcerned while such acts continued, adding that the joint exercise with the Police would ensure strict adherence to road traffic laws.
Mr Kudzawu further disclosed that the Union would collaborate with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to ensure that all commercial drivers renewed their licences as required by law.
He said drivers who were yet to obtain licences would be assisted to regularise their documents to enhance professionalism and accountability within the transport sector.
Touching concerns raised by some participants about the refusal of the Union to reduce lorry fares when fuel prices were reduced, Mr Kudzawu explained that fare adjustments were determined by the national leadership of the GPRTU.
He noted that the Kadjebi branch had no mandate to unilaterally review transport fares, as such directives were issued by the National Executive of the Union.
Mr Kudzawu appealed to drivers to cooperate with the planned exercise and comply with all road safety regulations to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users.
