British couple on hunger strike in Iran for several weeks

Tehran, July 9 (dpa/GNA) – A British couple detained in Iran, are said to have been on hunger strike for several weeks.

The two are still being denied contact with their families, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran network (HRANA) reported on Tuesday, citing a source familiar with the situation.

Both are said to have lost around 15 kilograms since the start of their hunger strike. The HRANA report suggests their conditions of detention have deteriorated, since they gave an interview to British broadcaster BBC.

The couple have reportedly been on hunger strike for almost two months, having begun their protest in May. At that time, the British nationals were forbidden from contacting their families by telephone. Family members are “deeply concerned” following reports that the couple are being denied medical care, the BBC reported.

In February, it emerged that the couple had been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. They were arrested last year on suspicion of espionage, whilst on a motorbike tour in the central desert province of Kerman.

The Iranian judiciary accused the tourists of collaborating with organizations, alleged to have links to Western intelligence services.
