Cairo, July 7, (dpa/GNA) – Qatar has summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador, after an attack on a Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Tehran of endangering international shipping and global energy supplies.
A protest note was handed to the Iranian envoy, Mohsen Ghanei, on Tuesday, according to Qatar’s state news agency QNA. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Iran bears “full responsibility” for the attack on the LNG tanker al-Rekayyat.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported overnight, that a tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz had been struck by an “unidentified projectile,” citing the vessel’s crew. The more than 300-metre-long al-Rekayyat is owned by a shipping company based in the Qatari capital, Doha.
According to security consultancy EOS Risk Group, a fire broke out on board, following the attack and the crew abandoned the vessel.
The shipping company could not immediately be reached for comment. The UKMTO reported further security incidents, involving commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz later on Tuesday.
