Accra, Feb. 2, GNA- Shaikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam ,has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his election as the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 Presidential Election.

In a press statement issued on February 2, 2026, by his Personal Assistant, Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, the Chief Imam described the victory as a significant milestone in Ghana’s democratic journey.

The statement noted that Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious in a fierce contest involving four other aspirants during the primary election held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The Chief Imam said that the decision made by the NPP delegates served as a clear indication that Ghana remained a robust democracy characterized by religious pluralism rather than a theocracy.

He commended the NPP for conducting a peaceful congress, viewing it as an opportunity to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to constitutional normalcy and interfaith harmony.

The Chief Imam praised the other contestants for their display of sportsmanship, noting that their decision to concede in a spirit of conciliation and unification was vital for the party’s progress.

He stated that they had demonstrated that in a civilized democratic institution such as the NPP, approaches to intra-party contests were plural, but the ultimate objective remained singular.

The Office of the National Chief Imam also lauded the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission for their roles in the primary, highlighting their exhibition of transparency, accountability, and objectivity in the conduct of the election.

The Chief Imam reminded all Ghanaians of the necessity of democratic consolidation and the importance of maintaining unity in diversity.
