Hlefi (V/R), Jan 30, GNA â The Ho West District Assembly has conducted elections to reconstitute the Weto Area Council as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and promote community participation in local administration.
The election, held on January 28, 2026, at Hlefi, formed part of initiatives by the Assembly to enhance the functionality of sub-district structures and deepen inclusive local governance.
Mr Marcus Kingsley Florientus Bright was re-elected Chairperson of the Weto Area Council after a transparent and orderly electoral process conducted in accordance with the Model Standing Orders governing local government operations.
He was subsequently sworn into office by Mr Francis Dusey, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ho West, who underscored the importance of effective leadership at the area council level in advancing decentralisation.
Mr Dusey charged the Chairperson and members of the Council to discharge their duties with diligence and commitment, noting that Town and Area Councils remained critical to bringing governance closer to the people and improving service delivery.
âThe Area Council serves as a vital link between the District Assembly and the community, and your work directly impacts local development and service delivery,â he said.
The DCE urged members to encourage active community participation, uphold accountability and transparency, and support initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods within the Weto Area.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Bright expressed appreciation for the renewed confidence reposed in him and pledged to work collaboratively with council members, traditional authorities and other stakeholders to advance development.
âI remain committed to ensuring the effective operation of the Council and pursuing development priorities that reflect the needs and aspirations of our people,â he stated.
Heads of Departments and Units of the Assembly later engaged members of the Area Council on key governance and development issues, including revenue mobilisation, environmental sanitation and physical planning.
The engagement sought to equip council members with the necessary knowledge and skills to support local administration and enhance compliance at the community level.
Mr Dusey also paid a courtesy call on the chiefs and elders of Hlefi, where he emphasised the importance of strong collaboration between traditional authorities and the Assembly.
He said sustained partnership with traditional leaders was essential for the successful implementation of development initiatives and the maintenance of peace and stability in the area.
