Sunyani, (Bono), Jan. 26, GNA – Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) preparing for the party’s Election 2028 Presidential Primary have been urged to look beyond the Saturday January 31 elections.
Mr Shadrach Abrefa-Mensa, a former Bono Regional Deputy Youth Organiser of the NPP, who gave the advice, said: “The bigger battle for us is the 2028 General Election”.
The largest opposition NPP has set Saturday January 31, 2026, for the party presidential primary to elect a flagbearer for the Election 2028.
Former Vice President Alhaji Dr Bawumia is contesting the race with Mr Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament (MP for Assin Central, Dr Bryan Acheampong, former MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former MP and former Minister of Education and Mr Kwabena Agyepong, former General Secretary of the NPP.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Abrefa-Mensa noted that: “The January 31presidential primary is only the beginning of a larger political challenge”.
He said that: “Our decision to elect a flagbearer early is strategic because that will give the party sufficient time to prepare for the Election 2028” and challenged the party people to unite and remain formidable.
“We must begin the rebuilding process now in order to well position our great party for electoral victory in 2028”, he advised.
Mr Abrefa-Mensa said after the presidential primary, the NPP would also elect polling station, constituency, regional and national executives, as well as Election 2028 parliamentary candidates.
He said he was highly optimistic that if the party was able to go through all those processes peacefully, the NPP would win the Election 2028 and appealed to the members of the party to measure their words in public discourse.
Mr Abrefa-Mensa commended the leadership of the party for enforcing discipline within the party.
