The Netherlands Says Morocco’s Autonomy Plan Offers Most Viable Solution to Sahara Dispute

Accra, Dec. 6, GNA – The Netherlands has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, describing the Autonomy Plan proposed by the Kingdom as “the most feasible solution” to definitively resolve the regional dispute.

This position was outlined in a Joint Statement adopted following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs and of Asylum and Migration, David Van Weel, held Friday in The Hague.

The statement emphasized that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty” represented the most realistic and credible approach to ending the long-standing conflict, echoing the international momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The Netherlands also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, expressing full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations based on the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative.

The goal, it stressed, is to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions.
