Volta Region records decline in road crashes in first quarter of 2026

Ho, June 22, GNA – The Volta Region recorded a significant decline in road crashes between January and March 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. 

Data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) showed that road crashes in January 2026 dropped by 44.4 per cent, with 25 cases recorded compared to 45 cases in January 2025. 

In February, crashes reduced to 20 in 2026 from 45 in the same month of 2025, indicating a substantial decline. 

Similarly, crashes in March 2026 decreased by 17.67 per cent, falling from 35 cases in March 2025 to 28 cases. 

The total number of vehicles involved in crashes during the period under review also declined by 40.8 per cent, from 201 in 2025 to 119 in 2026. 

Fatalities decreased from 28 in 2025 to 19 in 2026, representing a reduction of 32.14 per cent. 

The number of persons injured also dropped significantly from 142 in 2025 to 75 in 2026, reflecting a 47.18 per cent decrease. 

Pedestrian knockdowns reduced by 33.3 per cent, with 16 cases recorded in 2026 compared to 24 in 2025. 

Madam Joana Fafa Ayer, Volta Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency urged all road users to prioritise their safety when using the road. 

She called on drivers to strictly observe speed limits, including reducing speed to 50 kilometres per hour in built-up areas and towns, stressing that adherence to traffic regulations was critical to ensuring road safety. 

Madam Ayer further advised drivers to avoid unnecessary overtaking, especially on blind curves, and to take adequate rest during long-distance journeys.
