Ten Afghans shot dead by Iranian border guards, officials say

Islamabad, Dec 2, (dpa/GNA) — Ten Afghan nationals were shot and killed by Iranian border guards, while attempting to cross into Iran without documentation, a local Afghan official said on Tuesday.

Local police spokesman Mohammad Nasim Badri said the incident occurred overnight along the shared border in Afghanistan’s western Farah province.

Police said two additional members of the group remain missing. A second local official also confirmed the incident to dpa.

Thousands of Afghans attempt to enter Iran irregularly each year, driven by severe poverty, unemployment and ongoing economic hardship in Afghanistan, which continues to face the effects of repeated disasters and decades of conflict.

In 2025, tens of thousands of Afghan migrants and refugees were deported from Iran after Tehran, imposed a July 6 deadline for undocumented Afghans to leave the country. Returns surged in June and July in the aftermath of a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel.
