Tema, Dec. 16, GNA — The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) has cautioned truck drivers to observe road safety regulations to help reduce road crashes, which have claimed more than 2,600 lives nationwide this year.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Richard Nyarko, the Tema Regional Police MTTU Commander, said about 80 per cent of road crashes recorded between January and November were caused by over-speeding, wrongful overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance, and failure to wear seat belts.

DSP Nyarko gave the caution during a road safety awareness engagement with members of the Truck Drivers Association in Tema ahead of the Christmas festivities.

He said the MTTU was deeply concerned about the rising rate of road accidents in the country, especially during festive seasons, and therefore intensified public education to prevent crashes during and after the Christmas period.

He advised drivers to be mindful of road signs and traffic regulations while using the roads, noting that adherence to road safety rules would help save lives.

DSP Nyarko also urged drivers to plan their journeys properly and ensure that their vehicles were in good condition before embarking on trips, particularly on highways and motorways.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stanley Obeng, the Second-in-Command of the Tema Regional Police MTTU, appealed to drivers to continuously improve their driving skills and knowledge to enhance safety standards on the roads.

He said improving driving competence would help reduce careless driving and contribute significantly to the prevention of road crashes.
