Tema, June 29, GNA – Several communities in Tema and its environs were inundated on Monday, following hours of heavy rainfall, leaving roads submerged, commuters stranded and disrupting human and vehicular movement.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that areas including Communities Seven and Eight, as well as Tema Newtown, Lashibi, Dawhenya and Kpone, experienced varying levels of flooding.

A section of the Tema-Aflao Highway at the Dawhenya Terrazzo bridge was overtopped by floodwaters, submerging some vehicles and cutting off access between Tema and communities such as Prampram, Ningo, Ada and parts of the Volta Region.

Mr Moses Kutor, Assembly Member for the North Dawhenya Electoral Area, issued a safety alert, urging residents to avoid flood-prone areas and exercise caution.

He said that personnel from the Ningo-Prampram District Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) worked through the early hours of Monday to reduce overflow and facilitate the safe movement of people and vehicles.

The GNA observed that many commuters were stranded at various locations as commercial vehicles were scarce because of the flooding.

At the VALCO Roundabout in Tema, portions of the road became unmotorable after a tree reportedly fell across the road, worsening traffic congestion.

Motorists who attempted to use alternative inner roads were also stranded as floodwaters had submerged several access roads within the affected communities, forcing some residents and commuters to return home.

Some schools in the affected areas also issued notices to parents, advising them not to insist on sending their children to school due to the prevailing weather conditions and safety concerns.

The heavy rains also affected electricity supply in some parts of the Greater Accra Region after floodwaters impacted critical power infrastructure, prompting the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to temporarily shut down the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations as a precautionary safety measure.
