Hundreds of arrests in major drug raid in Italy

Rome, Dec 21, (dpa/GNA) – During a large-scale drug raid in several Italian cities, with hundreds of arrests, some 1.4 metric tons of drugs have been seized.

The raid was a coordinated operation in several provinces targeting organized crime, Italian news agency ANSA reported on Saturday. Specifically, there were 384 arrests and 655 charges laid, ANSA reported.

In total, investigators secured 35 kilograms of cocaine, 1,370 kilograms of cannabis products and 1 kilogram of heroin.

The investigators from the mobile task forces present throughout Italy found 41 firearms, 80 bladed weapons and over €300,000 ($351,386) in cash, ANSA reported. The money is considered to be proceeds from drug trafficking.

The trade is said to have been partly conducted through cannabis shops. Therefore, there were targeted inspections of the sale of products in cannabis shops.

More than 300 shops were reportedly checked; five of them in three different cities were seized.

According to the information, several social media profiles have been identified, with their content currently under review.

Depending on the outcome of the reviews, the profiles are to be reported to the judicial authorities so that a block can be initiated.
