Accra, Dec. 9, GNA – The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has responded to a video circulating on social media in which a group of visiting Black Americans alleged that they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals claiming to be police officers.

In a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency, on Monday, in Accra, the Authority said it had taken note of the incident and assured the public that the Ghana Police Service, together with the Cyber Security Authority, had already commenced full investigations into the matter.

According to the GTA, the two agencies were addressing the issue with the urgency and seriousness it warrants, and the public would be informed once the investigations were concluded.

The Authority said as Ghana welcomed thousands of visitors for this year’s “December in GH” festivities, the country remained a safe and trusted destination.

It noted that national security systems, working alongside law-enforcement institutions and tourism sector partners, had been strengthened to ensure the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all travelers throughout the festive season.

The GTA further urged the public to remain calm and to allow the designated security agencies to complete their investigations without interference.

It said visitors who might require assistance or wish to make enquiries could contact the Authority.

“Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the statement added.
