Accra, June 3, GNA – The Ghana Federation of American Football (GFAF) has launched a strategic partnership with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., to support the Black Stars’ campaign towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The initiative marks a new phase of sports diplomacy aimed at strengthening ties between Ghana and the United States through sports while promoting Ghana’s participation on the global sporting stage.
The GFAF delegation was led by Secretary General Mr. Mohammed Osman Nkosi and Senior Coaching Advisor Mr. Chadwick Louisville, Head Coach of West Potomac High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
They were received by Mr. Bernard Quantson, Head of the Consular Section of the Ghana Embassy and members of his team.
The meeting underscored the growing collaboration between Ghanaian sports institutions and diplomatic missions abroad, with both sides exploring opportunities to leverage sports for national development and international cooperation.
Speaking during the engagement, Mr. Nkosi highlighted the significance of the partnership and the opportunities presented by the growing global profile of American football.
He noted that the inclusion of American football in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games provided a unique opportunity for Ghana to develop athletes and strengthen international sporting partnerships.
He said, “the importance of such partnerships is key, especially as American football is set to make its debut in the LA 2028 Olympics.”
“The Olympic inclusion offers a clear target for athlete development and international collaboration over the next four years.”
Mr Nkosi explained that the federation sought to use American football as a platform for cultural exchange and youth development, while creating opportunities for Ghanaian athletes both at home and in the United States.
Discussions during the meeting focused on a range of initiatives, including coaching clinics, talent development pathways, educational exchange programmes, and other activities aimed at expanding the sport and enhancing opportunities for young people.
The two parties also expressed their commitment to promoting youth empowerment, diaspora engagement and sustainable development through sports.
They agreed that stronger collaboration between sporting bodies and diplomatic institutions could contribute significantly to deepening Ghana–United States relations while creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation of athletes.
The partnership is expected to support broader efforts to mobilise Ghanaian communities in the diaspora behind the Black Stars as they pursue qualification and success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
