New Delhi, Dec 26, (dpa/GNA) – The High Court in Kuala Lumpur, has found former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak guilty of abuse of power, in a case linked to the embezzlement of state investment funds.
The court ruled on Friday that Najib, 72, was guilty on four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering, the New Straits Times newspaper and other Malaysian media outlets reported.
His sentencing in this case has not yet been announced.
Najib was said to have used his role as prime minister, finance minister and chairman of the advisory board of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund to embezzle 2.3 billion ringgit ($568 million) in stages.
He was previously sentenced to 12 years in prison and a heavy fine in connection with the 1MDB affair in 2022, and is currently in custody. Last year, a court halved his prison sentence to six years.
Najib served as the prime minister of Malaysia from 2009 to 2018. He also served as finance minister and helped establish 1MDB as a fund for promoting the South-East Asian country’s economic development.
Najib has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he was misled by fraudulent financial advisers.
