Interior Ministry suspends Kantanka Security Services’ licence over Adwoa Safo shooting incident

Accra, June 23, GNA – The Ministry of the Interior has suspended the licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited following the shooting of Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya.

A statement issued by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister of the Interior on Monday said the decision was taken after preliminary investigations indicated possible violation of the PSO regulation, 1992 (LI 1571) which govern the operations of PSOs in Ghana.

A statement issued by Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the sector Minister, on Monday said the decision was taken after preliminary investigations indicated possible violation of the Private Security Organisation (PSO) regulation, 1992 (LI 1571) which govern the operations of PSOs in Ghana.

“The Ministry of the Interior has, with immediate effect, suspended the Private Security Organization (PSO) operating license for Kantanka Security Services Limited following reports of alleged use of unprescribed uniform, possession and use of firearms and ammunition by personnel of the company in the course of providing private security services on Sunday, 21st June 2026 at Kwabenya in Accra,” it said.

The usage of unprescribed uniforms, unathorised possession and use of firearm and ammunitions as well as security accoutrements by private security personnel constituted “a serious breach with significant implication for public safety.”

Consequently, the Ministry had directed the company to “immediately cease all operations forthwith pending conclusion of investigations into the matter,” the statement said.

“All institutions are advised to refrain from conducting business with Kantanka Security Services Limited pending the conclusion of investigations and further directives from the Ministry.

It further directed that the company to fully cooperate with the Ghana Police Service and provide all necessary information to facilitate a thorough investigation.

The statement explained that suspension was an administrative measure intended to safeguard public safety and security.

“Appropriate action will be taken upon completion of investigations and in accordance with the laws and regulations governing private security operations in Ghana.”

It urged the public to report any unlawful activities involving PSOs and their personnel to the nearest Police Station.

The statement reminded the PSOs of public notice on uniform compliance issued on February 5, 2026, by the Ghana Police Service and urged them to adhere to it.

It reiterated the ministry’s commitment to ensuring strict compliance with all regulatory requirements by PSOs, saying it “will not hesitate to take necessary action against any PSO found to be in breach of the law.”

Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo sustained a gunshot injury to her left ear whiles visiting her late father’s residence at Kwabenya on Sunday, June 21.

The police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile six persons have been arrested by the Police in connection with the incident at Kwabenya.
