Bechem, (Ahafo), June 23, GNA – The Reverend Benjamin Appiah, the Brong Ahafo Presbytery Chairperson of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has bemoaned the excessive and unproductive use of social media in the country.

Describing the phenomenon as a “new craze stealing precious time”, the Rev Minister noted that the uncontrolled use of the new media was tearing families apart, and disintegrating family bonds and unity.

He regretted that mobile phones had now become a celebrated idol, worrying that: “Nowadays everybody including couples, children, students and workers now spend more time on their mobile phones and new media”.

Rev Appiah raised concerns when speaking at a thanksgiving service to climax the four-day conference of the Brong Ahafo Presbytery Singing Bands Union (BAPSBU) at Bechem in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo Region. The conference was held on the theme: “Cel

ebrating our heritage, building on the foundation already laid-our music, our impact”.

Rev Appiah noted that despite the negative influences, social media had other positives and urged the youth in particular ‘see the positive sides of new media’ and use their mobile phones productively and profitably to transform lives.

Brother Samuel Yaw Owusu, the National Vice President of the BAPSBU advised the union to live godly lives and to impact society positively.

“There is power and strength in music”, he stated and urged the union to let their ministries bring salvation and joy to mankind, saying that doing so would glorify God. Bro Owusu advised the public to be friendly to the environment and called for a collective approach to stem the growing illegal mining activities in the country.

He urged that: “Let’s stop galamsey and dumping refuse and building in waterways and to preserve the environment for posterity”.

The service was also attended by Bro George Osei Bampoe, National President of the Union and the Rev Samuel Amankwah Amponsah, the Chaplain of BAPSBU.
