Accra, Dec. 12, GNA – A high‑level Chinese delegation has toured the National Theatre in Accra to assess its condition and determine the scope of renovation required.

The visit formed part of a joint engagement between officials of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and representatives of the Chinese government.

The meeting is expected to pave the way for the finalisation of technical assessments, architectural documentation and renovation timelines, marking a significant step toward the refurbishment of the national cultural monument.

Mr. Henry Malm, Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, in a welcome statement, underscored the importance of the partnership and the urgency of restoring the facility.

He said technical documents and preliminary assessments had been completed, adding that the refurbishment must merge modern standards with the experiences of professionals who had managed and worked in the Theatre for decades.

Mrs. Korkor Amarteifio, Board Chair, said any renovation must reflect the evolving needs of Ghana’s creative sector.

“We know what has worked for us and what has not. The world has changed since the Theatre was built in the early 1990s, and any renovation undertaken now must reflect present realities.”

Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, said the Ministry and Board, together with a management consultant, had developed a five‑year strategic vision for the Theatre.

She said the refurbishment must align with this vision and support the long‑term transformation of the institution into a modern, functional, and competitive arts centre.

The Minister reflected on the historical significance of the Theatre and expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding partnership with Ghana in the cultural sector.

“We are grateful to your government for this Theatre. It has given countless talented Ghanaians the opportunity to learn, grow and showcase their creativity.”

Madam Gomashie said the drama studio that originally occupied the site held significant cultural value, adding that earlier attempts to maintain the facility had been inadequate.

She noted that the Theatre’s first request for renovation support from the Chinese Embassy was made during her tenure as Deputy Minister, reaffirming the urgency of the project.

Mr. Li Yaohong, Head of the Chinese delegation, reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s cultural development.

He said he would liaise with his government to ensure the National Theatre was restored and maintained to the highest standard, befitting its national status.
