Dresden (dpa) – Authorities had to lift a tram on Monday after a girl, 13, was hit by one in the south-eastern German city of Dresden and trapped between the train and the platform.
The fire brigade performed the rescue and the girl was taken to hospital with serious injuries. It was not immediately clear how the accident happened. The police are asking witnesses for information.
The police say the girl was on a pedestrian crossing just before the stop when she was hit by the tram.
The fire brigade said, there was a risk the girl would become hypothermic. She was kept warm with blankets and a halogen spotlight. Parts of the railing on the platform were removed to free the child.
The tram was then lifted, causing the platform to sink, which resulted in the tram treathening to tip over. The girl was finally freed during a second lifting attempt.
The 47-year-old tram driver, relatives of the injured girl and several secondary school pupils who had witnessed the accident were given first aid at the scene. Forty firefighters were involved in the rescue.
