At least 37 killed by floods in western Morocco

Rabat, Dec 15, (dpa/GNA) – At least 37 people have died after flash floods triggered by heavy rains, swept Morocco’s Atlantic coast, state news agency MAP reported on Monday.

“Extraordinary storms” led to flooding in Safi province in western Morocco on Sunday evening, leaving another 14 people injured, it said.

Emergency forces hauled bodies and survivors from the water and searched for those missing, MAP reported.

Dozens of people were treated in hospital but have since been released, according to local reports.

Images and videos circulating online show entire neighbourhoods submerged by water.

In the old town of the provincial capital Safi, which is located on the Atlantic Ocean, dozens of buildings and shops were temporarily flooded.

School lessons were suspended for three days due to the flooding.
