Obuasi, Aug. 13, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has donated 400 waste bins and two waste collection tricycles, valued at about GH¢660,000.00, to support sanitation and waste management efforts in the Obuasi Municipality and Obuasi East District.
The intervention is expected to strengthen waste collection and transportation systems, promote responsible waste disposal, and help curb indiscriminate dumping in the two local authorities.
Under the initiative, each Assembly received 200 waste bins and one waste collection tricycle.
The waste bins would be strategically positioned at designated points to facilitate proper waste disposal, while the tricycles would aid in the collection and transportation of waste from communities.
The donation forms part of AngloGold Ashanti’s Keeping Obuasi Clean Campaign (KOCC), launched in 2019, and aligns with the company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which identifies sanitation, water and strategic partnerships as key pillars for sustainable community development.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Richard Ansong, Communications Superintendent of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, said sanitation remained a critical component of the company’s community development agenda.
He stressed the need for sustained collaboration among the mining company, the Assemblies, and residents to ensure that sanitation interventions achieved the desired impact.
Mr Ansong said the provision of the waste bins and tricycles underscored the company’s commitment to supporting local authorities in addressing sanitation challenges and promoting healthier communities.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Assemblies, Madam Faustilove Appiah Kanin, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi, expressed appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti for the support.
She pledged the Assemblies’ commitment to ensuring the proper use, management and maintenance of the donated items to maximise their benefits for residents.
Madam Appiah Kanin also appealed to residents to use the waste bins responsibly and refrain from indiscriminate disposal of waste.
She noted that improving sanitation required not only the provision of logistics but also behavioural change and active public participation.
