Nerebehi (Ash) Nov. 24, GNA – A search by swimmers in the Offin River at Nerebehi in the Atwima-Nwabiagya south Municipal assembly to retrieve the body of a 10-year-old school boy, has entered its third day.

The boy, identified as Ben Kusi, a pupil of the Children of Christ Academy at Nerebehi, got drowned in the river, on the evening of Saturday November 22, 2025, when he was returning from farm with his grandmother.

Five swimmers immediately started the search of the boy after the incident on Saturday.

Mr Kwame Asante, assemblyman for Nerebehi electoral area told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the grandmother asked the boy to wait for her while she went to pluck some herbs from a nearby bush before they proceeded to the house.

On her return, some boys, who were swimming on the other side of the river informed her that, the boy removed his outfit and started swimming but unfortunately, got drowned in the process.

The grandmother rushed home to inform the Assemblyman and he organized the swimmers for the retrieval of the boy or his body.

He also informed the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Municipality and by 15 hours the following Sunday, the swimmers returned without the body.

The Assemblyman said, he had completed arrangements with the traditional authorities to pour libation and seek spiritual intervention before searching would continue on the following Monday.

He hinted that the point of the incident was very close to the confluence of the Offin and Dwahe rivers and therefore, deeper than where people cross to their farms and swim during dry seasons.

Mr Ayamba Osman, the Municipal NADMO Director said, a final decision about the body would be taken after its retrieval depending on the nature.

He cautioned farmers, women, children and all citizens to be extra vigilant with their activities closer to rivers, especially in these times of climate change that had affected or changed seasons.
