Accra, July 22, GNA – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Ghana has donated relief items to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO) to support thousands of people displaced by the devastating floods that affected parts of the country in late June.
The items, presented at the NADMO National Headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, is expected to be distributed to victims in the affected communities to provide immediate relief as recovery efforts continue.
Presenting the items, Dr Isaac Kankam-Boadu, Country Director of ADRA Ghana, said the donation reflected the agency’s commitment to responding to humanitarian emergencies and supporting vulnerable people during times of crisis.
He said the gesture was not only the presentation of relief supplies but also a demonstration of hope, compassion and solidarity with families affected by the floods.
“We gather here today not just to hand over items, but to stand with the victims of the flood and to tell them that they are not forgotten. They are not alone. God sees them and also cares,” Dr Kankam-Boadu said.
He said the donation, valued at US$20,000 (about GH¢220,000), was made possible through the support of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ghana, ADRA International, the ADRA Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya, and individual donors.
The relief items comprised 212 mattresses, 424 blankets, 110 boxes of bathing soap, 212 buckets of powdered soap, 212 gallons of liquid soap, 85 packs of toilet rolls, 35 packs of paper towels, five boxes each of toothpaste and toothbrushes, and 20 boxes of mosquito spray.
Dr Kankam-Boadu said although the items could not replace all that victims had lost, they would help restore dignity and provide immediate support to affected households.
He appealed to corporate bodies, faith-based organisations, philanthropists and individuals to complement government efforts by supporting flood victims as communities embarked on the long process of recovery and rebuilding.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Government, Alhaji Ahmed-Rufai Afarahim, Deputy Director-General in charge of Technical at NADMO, expressed appreciation to ADRA Ghana and its partners for the timely intervention.
He assured the donors that the items would be distributed promptly and transparently to the intended beneficiaries.
Alhaji Afarahim also appealed to corporate institutions, faith-based organisations, philanthropists and other stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to assist the victims.
He urged individuals and organisations to respond positively to the appeal to help affected families rebuild their lives.
Heavy rains that fell on June 28 and 29, 2026, caused extensive flooding across 77 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra, Central, Volta, Western, Western North, Eastern and Ashanti Regions.
Official figures indicate that the floods displaced more than 89,736 people from 17,948 households and claimed about 34 lives.
Hundreds of homes, farms, businesses, roads and other critical infrastructure were also destroyed or severely damaged.
The disaster triggered a nationwide humanitarian response, with government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations and faith-based institutions mobilising relief assistance for affected communities.
ADRA Ghana’s donation forms part of the coordinated efforts to provide immediate support while longer-term recovery initiatives continue.
