Accra, Nov. 13, GNA – The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Ghana Chapter is deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, Accra, on Wednesday, November 12, during the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise.
The incident led to the loss of the lives of six young ladies and left many others injured.
Dr Charity Binka Chairperson, AWLN-Ghana Chapter, in a statement said the fact that all the six victims were females is a painful reminder of the systemic vulnerabilities faced by young women in their pursuit of economic empowerment.
She said the incident underscores the immediate priority to re-examine how public recruitment processes are organized, particularly when they attract large numbers of young people desperate for work.
She noted that AWLN Ghana extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a full and speedy recovery to those receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
Dr Binka said AWLN Ghana believes that this unfortunate incident should prompt a comprehensive review and decentralisation of the recruitment process, ensuring that it is equitable, gender-responsive, and inclusive.
She said the Network calls for the use of modem digital systems and regional recruitment centres that can ensure a more transparent, orderly, and inclusive process that reflects Ghana’s commitment to equity and national development.
Dr Binka said beyond the immediate recruitment reforms, AWLN Ghana calls on policymakers to accelerate investments in job creation, skills development, and entrepreneurship, for young women and men across all regions.
She said in addition, AWLN Ghana demands a thorough, transparent investigation into the circumstances leading to this preventable tragedy and for accountability where lapses are found.
“It is the hope of AWLN Ghana that the lives lost should not be in vain. Rather, they should serve as a wake-up call for systemic change that values both human life and equal opportunity.” Dr Binka said.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace and may their families and loved ones find comfort and strength during this difficult time.”
