Ho’s ‘Oxygen City’ status depends on tree preservation – MCE

By Caleb Kuleke

Ho, June 8, GNA – Mr Stephen Adom, Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) says the city risks losing its renowned “Oxygen City” status without sustained tree planting and preservation.

He said the maintenance of the city’s clean atmosphere depended largely on afforestation and responsible environmental practices, noting that trees served as vital carbon sinks that purified the air.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency,  Mr Adom emphasised that  without trees, the people could not sustain and maintain the ‘Oxygen City’ accolade.

He warned residents against indiscriminate tree felling without authorisation, stating that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

Mr Adom emphasised that the identity and climate resilience of the municipality were closely tied to its green cover, and stressed that environmental protection regulations would be strictly enforced.

He disclosed that the Assembly, in collaboration with the Volta Regional Cadet Corps, would embark on a massive tree-planting exercise on June 20, 2026.

The MCE also revealed plans to plant trees along the dual carriageway to create a green canopy and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the regional capital.

With the onset of the rainy season, Mr Adom cautioned residents against dumping refuse into drains and constructing buildings on waterways, practices which he said contributed to flooding.

He emphasised that maintaining a clean environment was a shared responsibility and crucial to preventing disasters.
