Court: Suspect in Madeleine McCann disappearance can leave Germany

Berlin, Nov 10, (dpa/GNA) – A man suspected of involvement in the 2007 disappearance of British girl, Madeleine McCann, is allowed to leave Germany again, a court ruled on Monday.

The man is no longer subject to a travel ban, and may move within Europe using his national identity card, said a spokeswoman for the Higher Regional Court in the northern city of Celle.

However, other restrictions imposed on him after serving a prison sentence for rape, and other crimes remain in place.

The German national must, for example, continue to wear an electronic tag and report to the probation service.

The regional court in Hildesheim, also in the state of Lower Saxony, will now decide on new residence regulations for the man, according to the court in Celle.

A temporary ban on leaving Germany “in order to resolve technical matters” or a ban on staying in certain regions would be conceivable, it said.

The defence lawyer had previously lodged an appeal against the conditions imposed on his client, speaking also of a “massive prejudgement campaign” during the lengthy judicial proceedings.

McCann was three years old at the time of her disappearance, during a family holiday from an apartment complex in Praia da Luz in Portugal.

The suspect, who has several previous convictions, has long been the focus of international media coverage. The case has attracted particular attention in the United Kingdom.
