National Cadet Coordinator advocates compulsory cadet training in schools

Sogakope, Oct. 21, GNA – Mr Nicholas Nii Tettey-Amarteifio, the National Cadet Coordinator General of the Ghana National Cadet Corps, has called on the government and educational authorities to consider making basic cadet training compulsory in all schools as part of efforts to promote discipline among students.

He said the cadet programme remained one of the most effective avenues for building discipline, patriotism, and leadership skills in young people, and urged stakeholders to reintroduce it as a structured component of the educational system.

Mr Amarteifio made the call at Sogakope in the South Tongu Municipality during the commencement of the Leadership Training Camp for cadets drawn from various schools across the country.

Citing the example of Accra Academy, he noted that in previous years, all first-year students were required to undergo cadet training for at least six months, a policy that helped instilled punctuality, time management, and respect for authority among learners.

He said the initiative contributed immensely to shaping students’ behaviour and sense of responsibility, adding that similar measures could help address growing concerns over indiscipline among the youth.

ā€œWhile human rights and freedom of expression are important, we must also understand that society is governed by discipline. If we fail to inculcate discipline in the young ones now, it will become difficult to manage the leaders we are grooming,ā€ he stated.

Mr Amarteifio therefore appealed to the Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies to explore the possibility of integrating cadet training into the school curriculum, at least for a specified period, after which students could join other extracurricular activities.
