Youth activist appeals Akatsi South MP to support graduates

By Evans Worlanyo Ameamu

Akatsi (VR), Aug 28, GNA- Mr. Sitsofe Vuvor,  a youth activist in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region has charged Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi South Constituency and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, to take measures to support Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates in the constituency.

According to him, despite the Free Senior High School policy, many students in Akatsi South were unable to progress to Senior High School due to financial constraints.

He said that many parents struggled to afford school uniforms, textbooks, boarding items and transportation for their wards which forced some students to stay at home.

Mr. Vuvor, who is also a teacher by profession, in a letter August 24, 2025 to Mr. Ahiafor and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), emphasised that the young students were the future of Akatsi South and if poverty was allowed to stop them, the constituency would risk losing a generation of leaders, teachers, doctors, farmers, engineers, and innovators who could change the area for the best.

He explained that the youth had noted that several Members of Parliament across the country have supported Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates in their respective constituencies with scholarships, books and other essential items.

“Unfortunately for us, the MP for Akatsi South has done little to nothing to support the young people in the constituency, and this is a great challenge to us in the area of education,” he said.

Mr. Vuvor said that the MP’s duty was not only to make laws but also to stand with the people in times of need, adding that, “how many dreams must die before action is taken, how many brilliant students must sit at home because their parents cannot afford school items, our MP must rise to the occasion and support the graduates.”

He further appealed to the MP to establish scholarships or financial support scheme for brilliant but needy students to enable provide essential school items like mattresses, chop boxes, books, and stationers as well as help provide guidance and mentorship programmes to encourage students not to give up and partnership with NGOs, old students, and community leaders to expand opportunities

Mr. Vuvor believed that the intervention by the MP would not only bring hope to families but would also write their name in the hearts of hundreds of children which would ensure that no child in the constituency is left behind simply because of financial difficulties.

The people of Akatsi South were ready to support every effort the MP would make towards the noble cause while others urged the MP to work together with the stakeholders and community leaders to ensure that every child has access to education, regardless of their financial background.

Others also hoped and believed that the time has come for the Member of Parliament to make a significant intervention and make a difference in the lives of many students and graduates in the constituency.

Some citizens of Akatsi that the GNA engaged with remained hopeful that the call would awaken the MP to take measures to set an example and help the future leaders for a brighter future.
