Accra, Aug. 4, GNA – A fire outbreak at the Accra Tourist Information Centre early Monday caused extensive damage but was swiftly contained, with no casualties reported.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 0102 hours, with the first fire engine arriving within minutes.
A statement issued to the Ghana News Agency said the blaze, intensified by strong winds, was brought under control by 0332 hours., and fully extinguished by 0635 hours.
It indicated that the affected areas include the International Affairs Department, the Ghana Tourism Authority Call Centre, offices of the Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA), and the National Film Authority.
“The entire first floor and its contents were completely consumed by the fire. However, the ground floor and about eight offices, including the East Wing section, were successfully salvaged,” the GNFS said.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the outbreak.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the fire may have originated from the kitchen area of a commercial outlet on the premises, although this has not been officially confirmed4.
“We urge the public to remain calm as we await the findings of the investigative report,” the Ghana Tourism Authority stated.
The Authority assured stakeholders that further updates would be communicated through official channels as the situation develops.
