NADMO urges tree planting for disaster prevention

Sunyani, (Bono), June 10, GNA – Mrs Fati Kine-Lam, the Bono Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has urged individuals, households and communities to plant more trees to prevent disasters.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani she said: “trees are silent protectors of humanity.

They do not only enhance the ecosystem but also act as a remedy for flooding”. Mrs Kine-Lam said trees significantly contributed to preventing disasters through erosion reduction and thereby mitigating climate change impacts of extreme weather patterns and events.

“Trees protect and save our buildings from windstorms and rainfall related disasters as well as stabilize the soil and control erosion”, she added, saying “in landslide prone areas, trees stabilize slopes and prevent soil displacement”.

Besides shades, Mrs Kine-Lam said trees absorbed and retained water and acted as windbreaks, saying they also purified the air.

She emphasized that tree planting was also a sacred responsibility for environmental sustainability.

In another interview, Mr Kofi Adu Gyamfi, the Sunyani Forest District Manager, urged the public to participate in the nationwide tree planting exercise.

He said the Sunyani District Forest targeted to plant 310,000 trees between June and September this year and called for public support to stem illegal logging and lumbering.
