GRNMA unhappy about rescheduled meeting with Parliamentary select committee on health

Accra, June 26, GNA – The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed dissatisfaction with the rescheduling of a meeting on the implementation of their Conditions of Service (COS) from Today, June 26 to July 10, 2025.

The association on June 13 agreed to call off its strike after a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, pending the outcome of a follow up meeting with the committee today.

Ms Perpetual Ofori, President of the GRNMA said at a media briefing in Accra on Thursday that the unilateral rescheduling of the meeting was in bad faith as it would further delay the urgent implementation of four agreed items in their COS.

“We demand the implementation of the four agreed items no later than July, 2025. This is non-negotiable and we shall advise ourselves if any attempt is made to further delay the implementation,” she said.

The items are: an eight per cent on basic and uniform allowance for all of its members, fuel allowance for about 5000 of its senior staff and a book and research allowance for about 6000 of its members.

The President said with the other items, the association is amenable to their implementation no later than January, 2026.

Mrs Ofori said per a letter received from the Parliamentary Services yesterday, 25th June, 2025, the suspension of the meeting “follows the unavailability of some key stakeholders who were currently unavoidably outside the jurisdiction.”

She said the National Council of the Association at its meeting held on 25th June, 2025, said the strike was suspended in good faith and the association expectes nothing less than a reciprocity of same.

She said the GRNMA had decided to give the Committee the benefit of hindsight and still trust that their engagement with the Ministries of Health and Finance would be productive.

“We demand that timelines are clearly captured and signed off at the 10th July,2025
meeting to avoid any ambiguity in the implementation schedule,” she said.

The GRNMA President thanked the nursing and midwifery fraternity for the deep sense of solidarity during this period of fighting for what is rightfully theirs.

She called on the nurses and midwives to remain steadfast and wait for updates and
necessary actions that the National Council might deem necessary.

The GRNMA on June 2nd embarked on a roadmap of industrial actions which culminated into the total withdrawal of all nursing and midwifery services on 9th June, 2025 until the leadership of the association suspended the strike on 13th June, 2025.

Mrs Ofori said the decision to suspend the strike was based on the intervention of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and the pleas of Ghanaians, especially patients.
