Paris, May 20, (dpa/GNA) – Three people have died in severe weather in southern France, local authorities said on Tuesday.
Two bodies were found in Le Lavandou, located on the Mediterranean coast between Toulon and Saint-Tropez, the local prefecture announced on Tuesday.
Another person was found dead in the municipality of Vidauban, further north. Around 300 firefighters were reportedly deployed.
Le Lavandou and other towns in the south-eastern Var region had earlier been hit by thunderstorms and heavy rain. Several roads were closed due to flooding.
The MĂ´le and Giscle rivers were threatening to burst their banks, according to reports in the morning. Hundreds of households were without power.
Like many areas on the French Mediterranean coast and the Atlantic, the Var region is a popular holiday destination in summer.
Parts of south-western France were also hit by storms on Monday evening.
French media reported that people had to be evacuated from a stranded train near Tonneins late in the evening due to flooding. Train services on the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse were still partially disrupted on Tuesday.
