Abura Dunkwa (C/R), June 09, GNA- The District Chief Executive for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, Mr Daniel Mensah Wardy has urged residents in the district to stop indiscriminate cutting down of trees to protect the environment and support the beauty of the tree for life initiative.
He made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Abura Dunkwa after a tree planting exercise, stressing that tree planting was a collective responsibility of the public, community leaders, and all stakeholders.
It was in this direction, he said, that the Forestry Commission and the District Assembly planted more than 4,000 trees across some communities in combating climate change and environmental degradation.
The DCE noted that the partnership formed part of the intervention in ensuring that the country was kept green for posterity.
Some of the trees planted were acacia, mahogany, teak, wawa and many more species which were carefully chosen to suit the local environment as well as long term benefits to the communities.
More trees were planted at Abura Bando which had the roofs of many buildings ripped off during a recent rainstorm that hit the community.
Mr Mensah Wardy charged the youth to take ownership of the trees planted and properly nurture them for the exercise to be successful.
To sustain it, he said more education would be done to whip up the interest and passion of the youth in greening the environment to achieve the rationale of the initiative.
