Nkrakwanta (Bono), Jan. 28, GNA – Mr Ernest Amankwah, the Dormaa West Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region, has lauded the motives behind the proposed establishment of the ‘Women Bank’ by the government.
However, he noted that the current economic indicators would make it difficult for the government to realise that saying, the economy was down now due to high interest rates, rising inflation, and alarming public debt stock.
Instead, Mr Amankwah suggested to the government to channel more resources and funds into the Microfinance and Loans Centre (MASLOC) Agency to make loans readily accessible for women traders.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkrankwanta, the constituency capital, Mr Amankwah said with the current economic situation, it would not be easy for the government to deal directly with the rising inflation and interest rates and thereby improve Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“So, the question we are all asking is the measures President John Dramani Mahama can adopt or put in place to raise the much-needed capital to meet the minimum requirement set by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to establish the Women’s Bank,” he stated.
“Even the road map for the establishment of the proposed bank still remains unclear for now,” he said, and reminded the government that they had the obligation to meet the socio-economic needs, interest and aspirations of the people, and not a segment of the population.
Mr Amankwah said Ghanaians anticipated job creation to tackle the rising unemployment and thereby boost the economy.
