Swedru (C/R), Jan 28, GNA – The Agona West Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Swedruman Council of Chiefs, has organised a five-hour massive cleanup exercise at the Central Business District Areas to ensure environmental cleanliness.
Market women, chiefs, Assembly members, CSOs, shop owners and Agona West Assembly staff who participated, desilted choked gutters , removed garbage, swept streets and weeded public places.
Addressing the participants, Mr Simon Asare, the Municipal Coordinating Director, said the cleanup exercise was timely in the wake of severe cholera that had hit Swedru and two other towns.
The Director said the Assembly was in collaboration with health officials to put in place effective measures like fumigation of some public places and clinics in and around Swedru to curb the spread of the disease.
Mr Asare said the Assembly, in consultation with the Swedruman Council, had agreed to carry out the exercise on monthly basis to avert the outbreak of an epidemic.
He urged the chiefs, Assembly members and other identifiable groups to continue to support and facilitate the monthly exercise to be conducted in their various electoral areas.
Nana Kweku Esieni V, Nifahene and Regent of Agona Swedru, commended the residents, especially market women, for their
massive support and participation and urged all to join the following months.
He cautioned that people who would fail to participate would be hauled before Swedruman Council to answer questions.
He cautioned that the Council would not tolerate any recalcitrant residents, and traders who would continue to do business as usual when the exercise was ongoing.
The Regent warned drivers, especially Union leaders, who allegedly condoned and connived with some women to do trading at the main lorry park to stop the practice before the law caught up with them, because it was risky for passengers and the traders alike.
On Cholera outbreak, Nana Esieni urged the residents to keep their environment clean, adding that it was the collective responsibility of all to ensure that littering and dumping of refuse in gutters and on the streets were stopped.
