ZAMSTECH marks 50 years of academic excellence, appeals for infrastructure support

Bolgatanga, Oct. 6, GNA – The Zamse Senior High/Technical School (ZAMSTECH) has appealed to the Government, old students, the private sector and other stakeholders for support to address its critical infrastructure and logistical needs to sustain academic excellence.

The school, which marked its 50th anniversary in Bolgatanga, said inadequate classrooms, furniture, laboratory facilities, technical workshops, water supply and staff accommodation continued to constrain effective teaching and learning.

Mr Anabah Simon Amaligah, Headmaster of ZAMSTECH, made the appeal during the school’s Golden Jubilee celebration on the theme: “Celebrating Academic Excellence: Empowering Minds and Shaping the Future – The Role of Stakeholders.”

He said the school needed support to construct and furnish a modern science laboratory, provide well-equipped technical and vocational workshops and complete ongoing infrastructure projects.

The school also appealed for a 66-seater bus to support academic and co-curricular activities and a pick-up vehicle to facilitate administrative and academic operations.

Mr Amaligah expressed gratitude to the Government for awarding contracts for the construction of a perimeter fence wall, a three-storey, 18-unit classroom block and a multipurpose assembly hall.

He said despite the challenges, ZAMSTECH had maintained a strong record of academic, sporting and human resource development over its 50-year history.

Established on September 27, 1976, as Bolgatanga Junior Secondary School, it was one of the experimental Junior Secondary Schools in the Upper East region and was upgraded to a Secondary/Technical School in 1979.

It is the sixth oldest second-cycle institution in the Upper East region under the Ghana Education Service and has grown into one of the leading Senior High/Technical schools in the region.

Mr Amaligah said the school had a student population of 2,583 for the 2025/2026 academic year, comprising 1,307 males and 1,276 females, with 2,385 boarders and 199 day students.

“On this day of our 50th anniversary celebration, I passionately appeal to all stakeholders, especially government, our old students, our Guest of Honour, the PTA, NGOs, to come to our aid,” he said.

Mr Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, announced that the Minister of Education had agreed to place the school under the STAR-J project, a US$300-million initiative aimed at improving educational facilities across the country.

He said the move would pave the way for a comprehensive renovation of the school when the project became fully operational.

Mr Adongo said funding had also been approved by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for the completion of the structure currently serving as the school’s dining hall, which was originally designed as an assembly hall.

“The consultants are in the process of finding a contractor to complete what now serves as your dining hall, which was originally designed to be an assembly hall,” he said.

Mr Adongo further announced that GETFund had approved funding for the construction of eight classroom blocks to improve access to the school and expand its infrastructure.

Mr Akamugri Donatus Atanga, Upper East Regional Minister, said the technical dimension of education required sustained attention and investment, particularly as academic knowledge increasingly needed to be complemented by technical and vocational skills.

He said the Government was taking steps to provide ZAMSTECH with critical infrastructure, including a perimeter fence, classroom blocks, a modern dining hall and properly equipped workshops to strengthen technical and practical training.

The Regional Minister called on the school’s alumni, traditional authorities, communities, the private sector, philanthropists and government partners to deepen their support in the areas of infrastructure, technology, skills development, mentorship and innovation.

Dr Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister of Education, congratulated the school on attaining the 50-year milestone and encouraged alumni to translate their pride in the institution into sustained support for its development.

He said ZAMSTECH’s achievements over the past five decades demonstrated that the vision behind its establishment had been worthwhile and urged stakeholders to work together to ensure that the school remained productive over the next 50 years.
