Nchiraa Disturbance: Police restore calm, two dead, 13 injured

Accra, Oct.6, GNA – The Wenchi Divisional Police Command has restored calm following disturbances, which erupted at the Four Junction during the Yam Festival on Saturday, October 3, at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.   

“Two persons died whilst 13 persons, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and they are currently receiving treatment,” a release issued by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said on Monday.  

It said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that there were disturbances after the Yam Festival celebration on October 3, 2026, at about 1730 hours, after the programme had ended.”  

Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace, when there was a gunshot, the release said.   

“The bodies have been deposited at Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy”.   

Patrols had been intensified in Nchiraa, and the situation remained calm, the release said, and assured the public that every effort was being made to arrest any individual involved in the disturbances.
