Accra, Oct. 2, GNA – Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, has been granted GH¢50 million bail with three sureties by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
This follows his decision to turn himself in to EOCO on Thursday, accompanied by his lawyers, after the Office secured an arrest warrant from the High Court to compel him to assist in ongoing investigations.
EOCO is investigating Nana Baffour Awuah over alleged tax evasion, money laundering, causing financial loss to the state and unauthorised financial transactions.
The MP reported to the Office in the morning and was later escorted to his law chambers and residence at about 1700 hours for searches.
EOCO said several attempts since February 2026 to get the MP to report voluntarily had failed, leading to an attempted arrest at the court premises, which resulted in a confrontation.
Subsequently, it went to the High Court and secured the arrest warrant to compel the MP to assist with the investigation.
Dr Justice Srem-Sai, Deputy Attorney-General, said the MP was being investigated over alleged financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited and Equity Savings and Loans.
The MP’s former law firm had been engaged by SIC Life Savings and Loans to recover about GH¢3.5 million invested with Equity Savings and Loans.
The amount reportedly increased to about GH¢14 million with accrued interest before a settlement was reached.
Nana Baffour Awuah has, however, argued that the inquiries should be directed at his former law firm rather than him, adding that representatives of the firm had cooperated with investigators and provided statements and information.
Journalists gathered at the EOCO premises on Thursday morning to gather first hand information as the MP turned himself in, accompanied by his lawyers led by Mr Samuel Atta Akyea.
He was granted bail later in the night following the searches.
Police personnel were present at the EOCO premises, while crash barriers were mounted at the entrance, apparently as a precautionary measure.
