Tema, Oct. 2, GNA – Ghana’s drive towards cleaner energy and increased adoption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has received a boost with the maiden arrival of MT Asharami Ghana, a 40,000-cubic-metre LPG carrier, at the Tema Port.
The vessel delivered 5,000 metric tonnes (MT) of LPG to Ghana as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s LPG supply, enhance energy security, and support the transition to cleaner cooking fuels.
The arrival forms part of Sahara Group’s integrated LPG infrastructure strategy, which seeks to improve supply reliability and support Ghana’s ambition to increase LPG adoption from about 30 per cent of households currently to 50 per cent by 2030.

Welcoming the vessel, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, described the arrival as a significant step towards expanding access to cleaner energy solutions.
“The arrival of MT Asharami Ghana represents a significant step forward in our quest to expand access to cleaner energy solutions for Ghanaians,” he said.
Dr Jinapor said as the country worked towards increasing LPG adoption, investments in infrastructure, it was essential to strengthen supply reliability and achieve its clean cooking objectives.
He stressed the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to achieve Ghana’s energy transition goals.
“The government cannot achieve this vision alone. We commend Sahara Group for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Ghana over the years in supporting our aspirations for energy security, economic growth, and sustainable development,” the Minister said.
Mr Wale Ajibade, Executive Director of Sahara Group, said the maiden voyage of MT Asharami Ghana demonstrated the company’s commitment to cleaner energy, improved livelihoods, and sustainable growth.
“This maiden voyage to Ghanaian shores signals a resounding welcome to greater access to cleaner energy, healthier homes and communities, thriving businesses and a more sustainable environment,” he said.
Mr Ajibade said investments in LPG infrastructure were critical to meeting the country’s growing demand for cleaner cooking fuel.
He said the vessel, carrying 5,000 MT of LPG, would embark on the first of several voyages intended to strengthen energy security, expand access to cleaner fuel alternatives and support Ghana’s growing energy needs.
Ms Yaa Serwaa Alifo, Managing Director of Asharami Ghana, described the vessel’s arrival as an important milestone in Ghana’s energy journey.
“What we are celebrating here is the culmination of a vision and a bold statement of our commitment to Ghana’s energy future,” she said.
Ms Alifo said MT Asharami Ghana would help ensure that households, businesses, and families across the country had reliable access to cleaner cooking fuel.
She said the development would contribute to efforts to build a more reliable and sustainable energy future for Ghana.
