Okuapemman SHS won the keenly contested final with 23 points, ahead of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, which scored 21 points. Mount Sinai Senior High School placed third with 20 points, while Nsawam Senior High School finished fourth with 16 points.
The four schools qualified for the final after emerging winners of their respective groups during the zonal stage, which began on Thursday, September 29.
The other finalists were Aburi Girls’ SHS, Mount Sinai SHS and Nsawam SHS.
Renowned quiz master, Mr Dan Afari Yeboah, conducted the final, engaging the contestants and spectators throughout the contest.
His introduction onto the stage was met with cheers and applause from the audience.
As part of the prizes, the top three schools received trophies, an undisclosed amount of money, hampers for each contestant, and 20 copies each of exercise books and storybooks for the participating students.
Speaking at the close of the competition, Okokoroko Nana Kwamena Ansah I, Chief of Nsawam, on behalf of the Okuapehene, congratulated all the participating schools for reaching the final.
He urged the students to take their studies seriously, avoid promiscuity and stay away from illicit drugs.
He also advised them to choose their friends carefully to avoid negative influences.
Nana Ansah I particularly commended Nsawam SHS for reaching the final and finishing fourth, saying their participation was itself a significant achievement.
He subsequently announced a special reward of two brand-new laptops for Nsawam SHS in recognition of the school’s efforts in reaching the final.
“The future is right here before you. Take hold of it and work seriously towards achieving it,” he said.
An educational member of the Odwira Committee, Mr Obuobi Atiemo, told the Ghana News Agency that the special edition of the “What Do You Know?” competition was intended to remind young people and the wider citizenry of their history, traditions and cultural values.
He said the initiative was also designed to help students understand their identity and develop pride in their cultural heritage.
According to him, the competition would become an annual event to encourage students to learn more about the cultural norms, values and traditions of the Akuapem people.
The maiden competition formed part of activities marking the 200th anniversary of the Odwira Festival and added an educational and cultural dimension to the celebrations.
