Takoradi, Sept. 07, GNA – Two journalists at the Western Regional office of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) have been honoured for their exceptional reporting at the Western Region Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) 2026 Media/ Corporate Social Impact (CSI) Awards.
They are; Mrs Mildred Siabi-Mensah, a Senior Editor, who received two recognitions for Excellence in Child Online Safety Reporting under the Gender and Social Inclusion category, and Excellence in Environmental Policy Reporting under the Mining and Environmental Sustainability category.
Mr Emmanuel Gamson, a Chief Reporter, was also awarded for Excellence in Marine Conservation Reporting under the Fisheries category.
Other journalists were also recognised for their outstanding works in various competitive categories like Infrastructure and Community Development, Cocoa and Agriculture Affairs, Education, Crime and Legal Affairs, Health, and Business and Labour Affairs
They received citations of honour and laptops as their prizes.
The ceremony, held in Takoradi, on the theme: “Reporting Progress, Investing in People,” was to honour journalists whose work had shaped public discourse, influenced policy, promoted transparency and documented the development journey of the region.
It was also to recognise corporate institutions whose investments and social interventions continued to transform communities and improve upon lives across the region.
Mr Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, speaking at the event commended the journalists for their dedication and continuous contribution to the development of the region through their reportage.
He said the government recognised the important role the journalists played in governance and development, noting that their reports helped the government and other stakeholders to understand the realities on the ground.
He, therefore, encouraged them to continue holding public officials and institutions accountable, while also highlighting the progress, innovations, and positive stories emerging from communities.
Mr Nelson said the government would continue to create an effective working environment for journalists and asked them to continue giving attention to developmental issues in their communities.
“Our region has enormous potential, and the media has a role in telling this story of the potential while drawing attention to the challenges that must be addressed,” he added.
The Western Regional Minister congratulated the award winners, saying their recognition reflected their hard work, commitment, and contribution to society.
Mr Nelson said: “May this recognition inspire you to uphold the highest standards of journalism and continue to use your profession to inform, educate and positively influence society.”
Mr Desmond Cudjoe, the Western Regional GJA Chairman, said journalists played vital roles in all facets of society, yet continued to work under difficult conditions.
He said: “There are those who in the face of these challenges, strive to do quality journalism in the interest of the public, and it is these groups that we are honouring to motivate them to do more and to encourage others to follow their exemplary paths.”
He expressed appreciation to all stakeholders and institutions that supported the GJA to organise the event and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to promoting excellence in journalism for the development of the region.
As part of the ceremony, honorary awards were given to some veteran journalists for their long-standing contributions to the journalism profession and the socio-economic development of the region.
Some corporate organisations were also recognised for their exceptional commitment to sustainable development through environmental stewardship, social investment programmes, partnerships for development, local governance support, employment creation, and outstanding corporate social impacts.
