Kathmandu/New Delhi, Sept 28. (dpa/GNA) – Over 100 people have been killed in floods and landslides across northern India and Nepalm caused by heavy rainfall, authorities said on Monday.
In India’s Utter Pradesh state, which borders the Himalayan country of Nepal, officials have reported 81 people dead since Friday, amid three days of intense rain. The incessant rains and strong winds have inundated roads and lanes, cutting off villages and killing dozens through flooding, mudslides, building collapses, falling trees and electrocution.
The state relief commissioner’s office said more than 2000 hectares of cropland have been damaged, and more than 100 animals killed.
The rains in Uttar Pradesh were brought about by a depression over central India, the country’s Meteorological Department said.
India’s monsoon season, which runs from June to September, brings relief to farmers but routinely leaves a trail of death and devastation.
In neighbouring Nepal, at least 27 people have been killed in floods and landslides, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said.
NDRRMA spokeswoman Shanti Mahat, said on Monday that at least four people are listed as missing and seven injured, although the authorities were “still in the process of gathering information.”
Last month, Nepal and Tibet suffered deadly flash floods that killed about 1,450 people and left more than 5,500 missing.
Two more bodies have been found after an avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung peak near Nepal’s border with Tibet on Sunday.
Up to 12 people are still missing, the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) said on Monday.
The avalanche swept away tents of as many as 24 high-altitude mountain workers, who were preparing for the autumn climbing season, according to the NNMGA.
Heavy rain and snowfall in recent days have disrupted multiple roads and trekking routes across the country. The authorities have suspended trekking and climbing on several peaks.
