Accra, Oct. 23, GNA – Somoco Ghana, a mobility company, has donated a Bajaj motorcycle and 50 safety helmets to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to support nationwide road safety initiat
The donation forms part of the company’s “Safe Journey” campaign, imp
lemented in collaboration with the NRSA to sensitise commercial riders, passengers and pedestrians on responsible road use.
Mr Jerry Aye-Gboyin, Head of Marketing at Somoco Ghana, said at the presentation that the company had spent nearly a decade supplying motorcycles and tricycles in Ghana, making safety a core corporate responsibility.
“We came up with the Safe Journey campaign to sensitise riders and pedestrians to understand that getting there safely is more important than getting there fast,” he said.
He announced that the company was expanding its safety interventions through the establishment of what it described as “Ghana’s first Somoco Riding Academy.”
The academy would train and license commercial riders to ensure compliance with road traffic regulations.
Mr Martin Afram, Director of Planning and Programmes at the NRSA, expressed appreciation for the donation, saying road safety required collective action and strong partnerships with corporate organisations.
“The National Road Safety Authority cannot do everything by itself, so we call on corporate bodies and well-meaning Ghanaians to join us,” he said.
He urged riders and pillion passengers to wear certified helmets at all times, noting that protective gear was essential to reducing road traffic injuries and deaths.
Mr Afram also called on importers to comply with standards prescribed by the Ghana Standards Authority to prevent substandard helmets from entering the market.
