Accra, Sept. 9, GNA – The Management of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has repaired and deployed 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses onto major routes across Accra as part of efforts to improve public transportation and ease congestion in the capital.
As a result, the move according to management has increased the total number of operational Aayalolo buses serving commuters in the Greater Accra Region from 80 to 128.
Mr Awudu Dawuda, the Managing Director of GAPTE, disclosed this when Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, visited the Madina Aayalolo terminal to assess operations of the bus service and explore measures to make the system more efficient on Tuesday.
According to Mr Dawuda, increasing the fleet size was a key priority for the organisation upon assuming management, given the growing need to enhance mobility and address traffic congestion in the region.
He explained that GAPTE inherited 80 operational buses and undertook major repair works on 48 additional buses that had been grounded, adding them to the active fleet.
“The 80 buses that we inherited, the most important thing was for us to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra region, and so we had to repair over 48 buses, and these buses have been added to the 80 buses, and so we currently have 128 in our corridors. If I say “corridors,” I am talking about the routes we are on,” Mr Dawuda said.
The visit by the Minister forms part of ongoing engagements with public transport operators to strengthen urban mobility and improve the reliability of mass transit services in Accra.
