Several killed as Ukraine and Russia continue to trade strikes

Moscow/Kiev, Oct 25. (dpa/GNA) – Russian attacks claimed the lives of four people in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region south-east of Kiev, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on Sunday.

“Another 22 people were injured, including an 11-year-old girl,” he posted on social media.

In Vinnytsia, south-west of the capital, a drone struck a high-rise residential building, injuring six people, he added, reporting damage in nine regions.

The latest Russian strikes came, ahead of possible new negotiations between Kiev and Moscow under US mediation.

Russian forces had also attacked thermal power plants, electrical substations, coal mines, grain storage facilities and shopping centres overnight, Zelensky said.

“In Kharkiv, the Russians first struck a home improvement hypermarket, and then carried out a cynical double-tap strike on the emergency services that arrived at the scene.

First responders were injured,” he said. The Ukrainian president said Russia had launched around 1,600 guided aerial bombs, 48 missiles of various kinds, and nearly 2,300 drones at Ukraine over the past week.

Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, also reported deaths, injuries and destruction from Ukrainian attacks.

Two people were killed and 14 injured in a drone attack on the city of Belgorod, Governor Alexander Shuvayev said. More than 30 residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were damaged, he added.

Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that air defences had shot down 532 drones over various regions overnight. The claims by both sides cannot be independently verified.

The Kremlin confirmed plans for new negotiations between Russia and Ukraine under US auspices in November, though foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov did not give a date in an interview with Russian state television.

He expressed support for including European countries in the talks.
